Things to do in South Yarra
A curated neighbourhood guide — walks, culture, food, and local favourites.
One of Melbourne's most visited green spaces, spanning 38 hectares along the Yarra River with thousands of plant species and scenic walking paths. A genuine local favourite for picnics, morning runs, and quiet afternoons away from the city.
The northern end of Chapel Street between Toorak Road and Commercial Road is densely packed with independent boutiques, restaurants, and bars. It's less chain-heavy than it once was, with a good mix of fashion, food, and nightlife.
A working fresh food market operating since 1864, with quality produce, butchers, fishmongers, and specialty grocers under one roof. Open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — Saturday mornings are busiest and most atmospheric.
A large, relatively quiet public park used mostly by locals for sport, dog walking, and lawn tennis. Less crowded than the Botanic Gardens and a good place to get a sense of everyday South Yarra life.
A well-preserved 1840s homestead managed by the National Trust, sitting on elevated grounds with views toward the Yarra. Open for tours and occasionally for events — worth visiting for its intact Victorian-era interiors.
